Collisions in the Namespace

The world grows ever more crowded. We are not only not all unique little snowflakes, but we are reminded daily of just how, um, common we all are.

There's another shrdlu. Okay, there's a lot of other shrdlus; no surprise there. What makes this one especially bad is that it sounds like me. It isn't. For one, he's male. Me, not so much. On the other hand, for years and years and years, no one really knew that. I wonder (since we're in the same field) if he knows he's trading off my reputation (such as it is), or if it's really something he's unaware of. I've thought of making an account on his blog, and saying something, but it's just so odd.

I wouldn't care so much, except that now I'm even getting questions from friends. Someone told me that they had bought a book because I recommended it. I had to ask what it was, and then ask where they'd seen the recommendation, because I'd never read it. Not saying it's a bad book, either, just saying it wasn't me.

If you're curious, this is ground zero for the oh-so-spookily-similar shrdlu:
(I've removed the link. Turns out the web site's been gone for years.)

Although I believe that his background is in the defense industry, he can't have had the same access, or he wouldn't use that trite joke about "If I told you, I'd have to kill you." Damn, but I hate that line. He's an ISO; I was an ISSO (it's about the same thing). We even have a vaguely similar sense of humor. He appears to be on linkedin. Dammit. I'm on linkedin. I'm even considering putting in a disclaimer on linkedin, for my public profile, that says I'm NOT this guy.

I'm not a member (of itsecuritygeek), so I can't view his profile. I'd be curious to know how long he's been calling himself that (evidence suggests sometime in 2006), whether someone else has ever called it to his attention, and, worst of all, I feel like my identity's been stolen. Silly, I know, but there it is. If it wasn't in the same narrow little world, I probably wouldn't care. In fact, there's plenty of them out there, and for the most part, I don't care.
